TCFA Delegate Council Meeting
February 12, 2003 – Central Georgia Technical College
The Technical College Foundation Association (TCFA) delegate council meeting was held Wednesday, February 12, 2003, in the auditorium in Building H at Central Georgia Technical College. Lanie Shipp, president, called the meeting to order and welcomed the attendees. She gave a brief history of the organization, which began in 1998. She noted that in 2002 the first Benefactor of the Year award was presented to Archbold Medical Center and the first Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Mr. Ben Copeland.
Lanie then expressed appreciation to the DTAE staff, especially Commissioner Ken Breeden, Claire Neme, and Nurit Golan for their support of TCFA.
J. W. LeGrande, Coosa Valley Technical College, made a motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting. Larry Pike, Okeefenokee, seconded, and the minutes were approved.
Chunk Newman, West Georgia Technical College trustee, gave the nominating committee report with new officers recommended as follows: president--Bill Sanders, president-elect-- John Strelec, and secretary/treasurer—Susan Stephens.
Brandon Nix moved that the nominations be closed. The above slate of officers was elected by a unanimous vote.
Bill Sanders, incoming president, thanked TCFA for allowing him to serve. He stressed that TCFA emphasizes advocacy, friend raising, networking, and foundation board training. He pointed out that in the coming year with expected state budget cuts advocacy would be especially important.
Terry Elam, president of Augusta Technical College introduced the incoming president-elect, John Strelec, who served as principal of Augusta High School and superintendent of schools. After retirement, John became an advocate for Augusta Technical College where he serves as foundation trustee. John assured the group that he is excited to be involved with TCFA and that he will do all he can to continue the success and growth of the organization.
Bill Sanders brought a proposal for the changes in the by laws before the group. Chunk Newman made a motion to accept the changes, which included changing the term of office to one year. Lanie Shipp seconded and the motion was passed.
Sharon Baker, member of the Executive Committee, discussed evaluations from the TCFA joint leadership conference held in Savannah last October. Approximately 120 persons attended the TCFA portion of the conference. Evaluations were generally positive. She encouraged all trustees to attend this year’s conference, which will be held in Savannah October 29-31, 2003. She also indicated that trustees should share ideas for projects with the Executive Committee or Claire Neme.
Susan Stephens, secretary-treasurer, gave the financial report. Ron Newcomb, delegate from North Metro Technical College, made a motion to accept and Oliver Green, West Georgia, seconded. The motion was passed.
Deborah Rogers, DTAE, gave an update on the TCFA website. This delegate council, the TCFA conference, the TCFA newsletter, and the membership directory will be on the website.
Laurie Wicker, advancement officer at Heart of Georgia, presented a draft of TCFA’s first newsletter. Rose Flynn, Multimedia Developer at Georgia Virtual Technical College, created the layout and design. Plans are to publish the newsletter twice a year, before the delegate council and before the annual conference. Laurie asked for suggestions for the newsletter.
Susan Stephens presented a draft PowerPoint presentation that is being developed with help from Quick Start. The presentation provides a framework, which can be adapted by each college to fit their needs. Suggestions should be sent to Claire. When completed, the PowerPoint will be on the website.
Susan Stephens and Bill Sanders presented Claire Neme and Nurit Golan certificates of appreciation for their dedication to TCFA.
The group was reminded that Bill Daggett, a very popular speaker at the fall conference, would speak after lunch.
The meeting was adjourned.
